There is now a study that debunks an idea that has taken hold in recent years on the relationship between weight and health. The notion that you can be Fat but Fit — is a myth, according to a study published in the European Heart Journal.
Previous studies suggested there is a subset of overweight and obese people who don’t suffer the adverse health effects of excess weight. This group maintained normal blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Researchers found that even when that was the case being overweight or obese increased the risk of coronary heart disease by up to 28% – – when compared to those with a healthy body weight. They came to this conclusion after the largest prospective study of its kind which followed more than half a million people from 10 European countries for 12 years.
The bottom line according to the researchers is that there is no such thing as healthy obesity and maintaining a healthy body weight is a key step towards maintaining a healthy heart.
