Valentine’s Day is soon upon us, and that had us at the station talking about some of our favourite music featuring love or romance as a theme. A couple of pianists featured are below, with other performers leading up to Wednesday.
Yvgeny Kissin, piano
Liebestraum No. 3 (“Love dream”) by Franz Liszt
Liszt’s Liebestraum sounds like heartfelt emotions, a typical characteristic of Romantic era music. This performance is likely an encore as a bouquet of flowers have been placed on top of the piano – a fan near the front must have handed them to pianist Evgeny Kissin.
Jan Lisiecki, piano
Nocturne in C#- by Frederic Chopin
Chopin is closely associated with the Romantic era – many of his pieces are technically demanding, creating that “heart throb” quality, but when he composed something hushed, subdued – it was extremely intimate. This is Lisieck’s debut at the BBC Proms 2013 when he was 18.
