Penguin Random House Canada author Steven Price visited “Classical Mornings” with host Mike Duncan to discuss “Lampedusa”, his novel about the last prince of Lampedusa. The story takes place in Sicily in the late 50’s, as Prince Giuseppe Tomasi struggles to complete his last novel, entitled “The Leopard”. The narrative conveys the complicated heart of a man facing the end of his life, and struggling to make something of lasting worth, and his observations about the changes in his life – from being born into privilege and losing it all. The Prince seemed like a dilettante who didn’t achieve much during his life, but he had a colourful backstory, fought in World War I, and escaped capture twice.

Steven is a wonderful speaker (radio voice!) and he talks about what makes a book a masterpiece – which one can compare to why classical music has endured centuries of performances.  Listen to the interview here:

The discussion about looking back on a different era with some nostalgia is something many people can relate to.

Steven Price’s “Lampedusa” has been shortlisted for the 2019 Scotiabank Giller Prize and he previously penned the #1 nationally best-selling “By Gaslight”.
