November 3, 2019

Today is opera composer Vincenzo Bellini’s birthday, so “Sunday Night at the Opera” host Alexa Petrenko will mark the occasion on tonight’s show.

In Alexa’s words: “To celebrate the birthday of the great composer Vincenzo Bellini,  born November 3, 1801,  and as an antidote the hibernation response caused by shortening days, we turn to his *Bel Canto masterpiece,  La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker). Full of arias accused by some critics of being “too beautiful” , it’s an age-old story of misled jealousy, caused in this case when the heroine Adina, sung by Cecilia Bartoli, climbs into the wrong bed while sleepwalking …”

Uh oh.

Sunday Night at the Opera airs at 9 PM on The New Classical FM.

*Bel Canto – literally, beautiful singing, but also refers to a style of singing – see “Classical Mornings” co-host Jean Stilwell’s opera lingo defined here.
