Here’s what’s in store for the first Sunday Night at the Opera in July with host Alexa Petrenko:

“Gustav Mahler’s birthday on July 7, 1860, which is all the excuse I need to play you excerpts from his astonishing song symphony, ‘Das Lied von der Erde’ –  ‘The Song of the Earth’.  I had the great fortune to snag Donald Runnicles as my guest for tonight’s show. He conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony in this recording of the great symphonic song cycle, based on Chinese poems about the ecstasy of love, life, spring and drunkenness, magnificently sung by Johan Botha and Karen Cargill.”

Sunday Night at the Opera airs tonight at 9 pm on The New Classical FM.
