This week at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra: Sir Andrew Davis Conducts Wagner. Wagner’s works are lush, complex, with full orchestra. The first work, “The Ride of the Valkyries”, from the opera Die Walkure has become mainstream, and often used in TV or film to convey Something Very Dramatic Is Happening. The first act of Die Walkure is featured too, wikth soprano Lise Davidsen, tenor Simon O’Neill, and bass Brindley Sherratt. This is the perfect compromise for those who love Wagner but find the typical length of one of his operas – an intimidating four hours – a tad long. Smack dab in the middle is Berg’s Three Pieces for Orchestra.
These concerts take place Thursday, January 31 and Saturday, February 2, 2019, both at 8 pm at Roy Thomson Hall. The TSO website is a handy concert guide – it includes approxmiate running times, a sound clip, and updated TTC info.
See you at the Symphony!
