Canadian star mezzo soprano Krisztina Szabo spoke with Mike and Jean of “Classical Mornings” to talk about her upcoming appearance with Tafelmusik. She will perform arias by the Italian baroque composer Agostino Steffani – repertoire that is new for her, and as you’ll hear, an interesting departure from the well-known Handel.

The concert features Steffani’s Stabat Mater, sung by the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, and a mixed bag of arias, duets, choruses, and instrumental movements from his operas. Steffani sounds like quite a character – he was, along with being a well-known composer, a diplomat, politician, spy (musicians had access to private conversations in the courts … and remember, they are expert listeners), and priest! Oh, the secrets he must have kept …

Concert details:
Thursday, Nov. 8 at 8 PM
Friday, Nov. 9 at 8 PM
Saturday, Nov. 10 at 8 PM
Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3:30 PM
Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre                                              Bloor Street, west of Spadina. For more excellent concert info, click here.

Speaking of Handel, Krisztina will returns to the Tafelmusik stage in December 2018 for Handel’s Messiah at Koerner Hall and Sing-Along Messiah at Roy Thomson Hall.
