Composer Arvo Pärt turns 83 today. He was born on September 11, 1935 in Estonia. His music is deeply lyrical, intimate, with a touch of classical, religious, and Gregorian chant. The featured piece, a cello arrangement of “Spiegel im Speigel” (Mirror in Mirror) is an example of the minimalist style – very few notes, nothing busy or bombastic. The piano accompaniment uses the instrument’s highest and lowest notes; the piano Pärt grew up with had a badly damaged middle register, and that influence is evident here. This video features cellist Leonhard Roczek and pianist Herbert Schuch.
This work is simple yet resonates deeply. On a side note, I’ve page-turned for this, and I had to remind myself to breathe.
