Featured Classical Piece: Ravel’s Bolero

Featured Classical Piece: Ravel’s Bolero featured image

French composer Maurice Ravel wrote Bolero, a gorgeous, hypnotic work with a non-stop rhythm on the snare drum that is consistent throughout the WHOLE PIECE …. talk about stress. This music was prominently featured in the 1979 “10” with Bo Derek, and its popularity was reinforced when English ice dancers Torvill and Dean skated to an edited version of this work, during the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo. They were the first figure skaters in history to win 10 (there’s that number again) perfect scores of 6.0.

Bolero is an incredible work to hear live – you simply don’t get the impact of this music, and how it builds, and builds, and BUILDS, unless you hear it in person, with a whole orchestra going at it, with all the bows moving in unison. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra performs it November 21 to 24, and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 is featured too! Check it out – you’ll never forget the impact of hearing Bolero live. It’s the only way to go.
