Percy Grainger (Born: July 8, 1882 – February 20, 1961)
Happy Birthday to Percy Grainger, the Australian-born composer, arranger and pianist. In the course of a long and innovative career, he played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th century.
His most popular work is his arrangement of the traditional air In an English Country Garden. The piece has been performed by everyone from Leopold Stokowski to the Muppets, although Grainger admittedly grew to loathe the tune, saying “A typical English country garden is more likely to be a vegetable plot than used to grow flowers…so you can think of turnips as I play it.”
