Chopin's 200th Birthday Celebration

As the world honours its best-loved piano composer on Monday March 1, The New Classical 96.3FM is throwing open its doors and inviting music lovers to an afternoon concert and birthday party for Romantic composer Frédéric Chopin. Live From The Concert Lobby presents Avan Yu, rising-star Canadian pianist and winner of the Canadian Chopin Competition in a Chopin-filled recital.

The poet of the piano, Frédéric Chopin was born in Zelazowa Wola, Poland on March 1, 1810. He was a piano prodigy and in his short lifetime of 39 years he wrote more than 200 works including Nocturnes, Études, Polonaises, and Waltzes, dedicating most of them to his friends and students. Reflected in the intimate quality of his music, Chopin preferred performing in salons and homes over public concerts in large venues. It is only fitting that this great composer be paid tribute to in the intimate setting of the Concert Lobby at The New Classical 96.3FM, Canada’s only all-classical music radio station.

At 22 years of age, rising star Canadian pianist Avan Yu has been captivating audiences around the globe with his extraordinary musicianship. He first came to national attention by winning first prize at the Canadian Chopin Competition at the age of 17 and made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in the fall of 2008. Most recently, he debuted as soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa under the baton of Music Director Pinchas Zukerman and performed Chopin’s Polonaise brilliante with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, just before introducing Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper in a surprise appearance onstage at the same gala. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver, Avan currently studies at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin with Professor Klaus Hellwig.
