Blue Zones® Male Longevity Hotspot

What does it take to live to a hundred? It may have something to do with where you live. Ten years after identifying four communities where people live the longest– researchers at The Blue Zones organization have identified the place with the highest longevity in the world …for men. It’s Villagrande Strisaili, a village of 3,000 inhabitants in a mountainous, inland area of Sardinia. While in the U.S. one in 4,000 people is over 100; in this community, it’s one in 600.

In most areas of the world female centenarians outnumber male centenarians by 5:1, in Villagrande Strisaili men over age 100 outnumber women over 100. The researchers say it’s because men in the area traditionally have less stress, worry less and are more optimistic. And while older women tend to live alone, older men tend to live with children and grandchildren.

People in this community eat a plant-based diet, as do those in other long-living areas identified by Blue Zones including Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda, Calif.; the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and Ikaria, Greece.
Age is celebrated, and then there’s the wine. The researchers say Sardinian Cannonau wine has three times the level of antioxidants of other wines.
