Macular degeneration

Want to prevent a blind spot from appearing in your central vision? Here are some tips on how to prevent macular degeneration from the Oprah doctors Oz and Roizen: Make sure you get enough B vitamins.

Research shows that getting the right amount of B vitamins may help prevent the disease, which is one of the most common causes of blindness that often manifests as central-vision loss.

A recent 7-year study of women over 40 seems to confirm it. A B-vitamin combo pill taken daily helped to reduce age-related macular degeneration — as much as a 35-40 percent risk decrease in women whose combo pills contained folic acid, B6, and B12. Researchers suspect the B’s may lower levels of a protein that inflames eye-vessels.

Another sight-saving strategy: Include adding a few minutes of jogging to your daily walk, and eating lots of salad greens and nuts.
