Golf and Longevity

Now there’s scientific proof. Golf is good for your health.

A new study from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet finds the death rate for golfers is 40 percent lower than for other people of the same sex, age and socioeconomic status. It adds up to a 5 year increase in life expectancy..

The study is based on data from 300,000 Swedish golfers. Researchers believe golf is good for you because it is a low-intensity exercise that involves being outside for hours and walking. People play golf into old age, and there are also positive social and psychological aspects to the game.

Researchers do not rule out that other factors such as a generally healthy lifestyle, are also behind the lower death rate. But they believe the game itself has a significant impact on health.

There’s some bad news for all of us duffers though. Golfers with a low handicap are the safest.
