Power Foods, pt. 2

Are you frustrated by all those conflicting scientific studies about food? One week, something is good for you, the next week it’s bad. Well, nutritionist Leslie Beck has surveyed the evidence and come up with a list of so-called power foods. I caught up with her at the launch of her book: Foods that fight Disease.

“I’ve taken a good look at all the science and put together a comprehensive guide of what are some of the healthiest foods to be including in your diet; to be eating more often, so its a positive message. Instead of me telling people ‘Don’t eat this, eat less of this’, its foods that based on scientific research have proven abilities to fight disease.”

Last week, I told you about the benefits of salmon, black beans, quinoa, and swiss chard. Leslie also recommends kefir, which is like yogurt, It boosts the immune system and guards against bowel disease. Pomegranate lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and fights some cancers. Almonds protect against type 2 diabetes, avocados are linked to heart health, and so is green tea, which also fights breast and ovarian cancer.
