Malcesine on Lake Garda

The Klimts we know (and perhaps love) best, I believe, are the portraits, festooned with gold, amazing patterns, and almost oriental opulence. Even the most (seemingly) blasé youth cannot help but be blown away by the sheer physical beauty and passion (read ‘sex’) of The Kiss – after all, that’s what makes the world go ’round. The compositions are always strikingly unexpected and original.

Still, they are close-ups. The focus is contained within a tightly controlled perimeter, where the artist knows what it is and how it must be contained.

And then there’s THIS! A vast vista, full – not only of a multitude of subtle colours and shapes, but their many shadings and textures, and perhaps most of all, the light and shade in which they are enveloped.
Masterful…
