“I’m going to die,” thinks Whitney Goulstone as she lies on the ground, her body jerking violently. Her mother looks on in horror and dials 9-1-1. Whitney was experiencing her first grand mal seizure. Despite medication, Whitney’s seizures got worse, increasing in both severity and frequency.
In 2010, following the birth of her daughter, Whitney was able to participate in a specialized brain surgery performed under Dr. Taufik Valiant, Co-Director of the Epilepsy program at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre at UHN. Now, 5 years after the surgery Whitney is amazed to say, “I have not had a seizure since.”
