Opera in Concert is certainly getting ambitious putting on Meyerbeer’s massive grand opera Les Huguenots with a piano. Music director/pianist Michael Rose did a heroic job in attempting mood and colour.
For the sake of timing, the opera was shortened, but there was still a big sing left. Not all the voices were up to the task but it was a noble effort all round.
From the moment he stepped on stage as Marcel, bass Alain Coulombe showed his experience. He was simply sensational. Soprano Leslie Ann Bradley as Valentine is continuing to show her promise. I lauded her for her German Requiem awhile back. Her soaring voice is beautifully expressive. The stirring and compelling tenor of Edgar Ernesto Ramírez as Raoul never disappoints.
Of the other singers, Mark Arthur Petracchi as Saint-Bris is showing the beginnings of a hearty low voice that should take him far.
The chorus had a lot to do, and director Robert Cooper had them singing with verve.
