It’s 2006 and Toronto Summer Music is mounting a production of Don Giovanni. There is a lot of buzz about the young baritone playing the Don. Fast forward to 2011, and Opera Atelier’s Don Giovanni.
The lead role is again Phillip Addis and he’s sensational. He can act and sing with expressive perfection. His international career is well-deserved.
And then there’s baritone Vasil Garvanliev as Leporello, who is fulfilling the promise he showed off in various opera school productions. His comic timing is superb.
A cast member who is new to me is soprano Meghan Lindsay as Donna Anna, who has been training in Holland. She has a bright, forceful voice that commands the ear both in sweetness and in strength.
Also new is Italian conductor Stefano Montanari whose tempi may be faster than a speeding bullet, but who makes the score dance with life.
In other words, another superb production from Opera Atelier.
Don Giovanni continues at the Elgin Theatre until Nov. 5.
