Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie, aka Bill Coleman and Laurence Lemieux, has become the creative foster home to choreographer James Kudelka. Over the weekend, CLC mounted a fascinating evening of new works by the choreographer.
The production is called AllOneWord: The “See” Series. The “See” in the title refers to the fact that all the works contain the idea of seeing or being seen. Other than that, the short dances are unrelated, except for one thing. All are choreographed to the baroque violin Guardian Angel Sonata by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, each repeat a different version.
Kudelka is a master of the imagination. In these solos, duets and ensembles, little glimpses of life flash by. In See #4, performed by Xiao Nan Yu and Ryan Boorne, it is all about the woman starring in her own movie with the man in her slipstream. In the solo See #1, Lemieux is an angst-driven modern woman.
In short, Kudelka’s choreographic magic is still strong.
