Harbourfront World Stage has brought back Belgium’s les ballets C de la B under inspired director Alain Platel. The piece Out of Context – for Pina is Eurogold. (That’s the opposite of Eurotrash.)
It’s thrilling when you see dance that is deeply profound and provocative, yet immensely entertaining, all at the same time. This company has been in the forefront of dance innovation since its founding in 1984.
The nine dancers come out of their seats in the audience, go up on the stage, and strip down to their underwear. They each pick up a rose-coloured blanket.
What follows for the next hour and a half is a sweeping, and often bizarre, exploration of communication between the dancers. At the end, I was choked up with emotion. It was humanity, in all our foibles, writ large.
If you appreciate dance on the edgy side, this show is not to be missed.
Out of Context – for Pina continues at the Fleck Dance Theatre until Saturday.
