Nederlands Dans Theater 1
Choreography by Jiri Kylian, Lightfoot León and Crystal Pite
At the MacMillan Theatre until Saturday
Within the first second of the Nederlands Dans Theater concert, one knows the presence of greatness in the company’s glorious dancers. The repertoire NDT1 brought for this first Canadian visit in 14 years (the first ever in Toronto) reflects both the fabled past of NDT1, and the company’s exciting future.
Iconic master choreographer and former artistic director Jiri Kylian put NDT1 on the map. The new kids are resident choreographers, husband and wife Paul Lightfoot and Sol León, and associate choreographer, Canadian Crystal Pite.
Under Kylian, NDT1 acquired a reputation for strong production values, and that tradition continues. Each of the three works had quite elaborate sets. In terms of choreography, Kylian’s is gorgeous structured dance, Pite’s is new wave inventive, while Lightfoot León’s fluid movement and strong narrative element is near perfection.
Luminato bringing the great Netherlands Dans Theater 1 to town is what an international festival is all about.
Netherlands Dans Theater continues at the MacMillan Theatre tonight and tomorrow.
