West coast playwright Joan MacLeod has penned a wonderful one-woman show for marvellous actor Nicola Lipman. Another Home Invasion is by turns funny, poignant, witty and finally, heart-breaking.

Lipman’s character is an elderly woman called Jean who describes herself as being on the front lines. In other words, she has to cope with real life while she looks after her husband Alec who has had a severe stroke resulting in Alzheimer’s-like symptoms. Jean is just waiting for the day when she and Alec can move into the Kiwanis, her retirement home of choice.

The home invasion of the title is carried out by one of Vancouver’s druggies, and this incident changes Jean’s life forever. Now such a story line might seem light years removed from the funny bone, but as MacLeod makes her stinging indictment against the treatment of the elderly in this country, the audience is awash in tears of laughter.

Another Home Invasion continues at the Tarragon Theatre until Apr. 19.
