You only have a couple of days left to catch the zany British show Cooped that is part of Harbourfront’s World Stage series. The humour, both slapstick and scatological, is in the same British tradition as the Goon Show and Monty Python where physical comedy combines with insanity. Even though this is not my favourite kind of humour, Cooped does contain some howlers, and much of the audience roared with laughter throughout.
The play is a take on British Gothic, a sort of a Turn of the Screw meets the Woman in White. Written by the ensemble and director Cal McCrystal, the story follows the travails of an innocent young girl at an isolated mansion who is the confidential secretary to the owner.
The international cast plays with tongue-in-cheek and they are excellent – Britains Toby Park and Petra Massey, Spain’s Aitor Basauri and Germany’s Stephan Kreiss. You will find them all irresistible.
Cooped continues at Premiere Dance Theatre until Friday.
