The cheering started early, and by the end of 3 Mo’ Divas, the applause was thunderous. The show is one of the more pleasant surprises of the season.
New York director/choreographer Marion J. Caffey’s musical revue features three full-bodied and glamorous black singers who begin with opera and end with gospel. On the way these talented women pass through Broadway and film songs, jazz, blues and soul. Musical director and pianist Annastasia Victory leads a tight five-man band that really wails. The divas appear in a parade of flashy gowns courtesy of Toni-Leslie James.
Laurice Lanier is a lush mezzo, Jamet Pittman is a smooth lyric soprano and Nova Payton is a feathery-light coloratura. The subtitle of the show is A Celebration Of Class, Sass & Style and these women certainly have it all. The music is simply fabulous.
This exuberant show is tonic for the winter blues.
3 Mo’ Divas continues at the Winter Garden Theatre until Mar. 16.
