The Chichester Festival Theatre’s six hour adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Nicholas Nickleby is the theatre event of the season. The two-part production is a shining example of the epic scope and brilliant character portrayal that is the glory of the British stage.
David Edgar’s adaptation, originally created in 1980 for the Royal Shakespeare Company, had a monumental success in both London and New York. Chichester directors Jonathan Church and Philip Franks have shaved off a couple of hours, but the relentless struggles of the Nickleby family still remain intact.
Over the course of the play, one comes to know both the 27 actors and the many characters they take on like old friends, and it is an actual emotional loss when the final curtain comes down. This production takes you to another world.
Everything about Nicholas Nickleby works, including Simon Higlett’s design and Stephen Oliver’s music. Do not miss this show!
Nicholas Nickleby continues at Princess of Wales Theatre until Apr. 20.
