The Scandelles (a.k.a. Sasha Van Bon Bon and Kitty Neptune) are striptease artists with brains. Their cabaret satire Who’s Your Dada? presents a series of loosely-linked vignettes that skewer society’s values inspired by the antiwar and antiart Dadaist movement.
The iconoclast Scandelles produce sophisticated missiles that both hit and miss their targets.
When the Scandelles are on, they are wonderfully clever. Sketches about The Joys of Sex, Picking Up Girls Made Easy, the world lap dance champion competition, plastic surgery and the aftermath of a group orgy are absolute howlers.
Unfortunately, the dance sequences are not quite up to the level of the text. There is also an amateurish quality that made some sketches seem more like laboured performance art than polished craft. The focus as a whole seems like a scatter gun approach.
I’d like to see a little less self-indulgence and little more professional crispness.
Who’s Your Dada continues at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre until Feb. 9.
